Madeira is known as the Pearl of the Atlantic, famous for dramatic cliffs, lush levadas and incredible hiking trails. However, don’t be fooled into thinking Madeira is just for grown-ups, it’s a treasure trove of outdoor activities perfect for families with kids of all ages.

Whether you want to relax in a luxury hotel for a week, explore beautiful forests and gardens, spot whales and dolphins in their natural habitat or try a more adrenaline-filled coasteering adventure, Madeira really does have something for everyone.

This is an absolute must-do! Whizz down the steep streets of Monte in traditional wicker toboggans, steered by two experienced carreiros. It’s an exhilarating and unique experience that the whole family will love.

Explore the Wonders of the Madeira Aquarium:

Madeira Aquarium is located in Porto Moniz and is famous for its natural lava pools and fascinating glimpse into the diverse marine life surrounding the island. Kids love the colourful fish, rays and sharks!!

There’s also a scuba diving experience available for an extra fee.

The crystal clear lava pools at Porto Moniz are incredible. The pools were formed by volcanic eruptions and are a very special swimming experience that even young children will enjoy as the water is so calm.

Top tip – Don’t forget your swimsuits and water shoes!

A Cable Car Adventure to Monte Palace Tropical Garden:

The Funchal to Monte cable car is a definite must-do activity. The views of the city and coastline are incredible, but the best is when you reach the top. The stunning Monte Palace Tropical Garden is full of hidden lakes, peacocks, and oriental gardens. It’s a great way for kids to burn off some energy.

Older kids and grown-ups will also enjoy the Monte Palace Madeira Museum, located at the highest point of the garden. The museum is home to a fantastic collection of modern and contemporary art, minerals, and gemstones.

Go Whale and Dolphin Watching:

The waters around Madeira are full of incredible marine life, making it an ideal destination for whale and dolphin watching excursions. Several companies offer boat trips that take you out to sea for a chance to spot these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. This is an educational and awe-inspiring experience for the whole family.

Discover the Magic of the Funchal Municipal Garden:

Located in the heart of Funchal, this beautiful garden is a quiet paradise perfect for a leisurely stroll and escape from the busier activities the island offers. Kids ( and adults ) will enjoy the vibrant flowerbeds, the charming fountains, and the various birds that call the garden home. It’s a great place for a picnic or to relax and enjoy the colourful surroundings.

Embark on a Mini Levada Walk

A levada is a channel of water originally created to transport water from the wetter north to the drier south of the island. Visitors can walk alongside the levada as a way to explore Madeira.

Levada walks are mostly flat, but some are longer and steeper than others, so it’s worth doing some research first to find one suitable for your family. Madeira has an incredible 2500km of levadas to explore! It’s a great way to explore the UNESCO Laurissilva forest.

Top tip –  Always prioritise safety and check the difficulty level before setting out.

Visit the Interactive Science Centre – Centro de Ciência Viva

Located in Funchal, this science centre offers hands-on exhibits, interactive displays on physics and biology, workshops and demonstrations, it’s a great place to spark curiosity and encourage scientific exploration.

CR7 Museum

Football fans will love the CR7 Museum. It’s only small but inexpensive and full of memorabilia.

Indulge in Local Treats:

No family holiday is complete without sampling the local delicacies! Treat your kids to bolo de mel (honey cake), poncha(non-alcoholic versions are available!), and the delicious fresh fruit that Madeira is famous for, like passion fruit and mangoes. A trip to the local market in Funchal is definitely worth a visit.
